When should you go on your honeymoon?

Allison Doyle

Your honeymoon is a chance for you and your spouse to get away from it all and celebrate your recent marriage, especially after the often arduous wedding planning process. However, when planning your honeymoon, there are several factors to consider, especially when deciding when you should take your trip. Should you go immediately after the wedding? Should you wait a month or two? The answer depends entirely on you and your spouse’s needs, so it’s important to take a moment during the wedding planning process to determine when you and your partner should go on your honeymoon.

Choose your destination

Before you make a decision concerning when you want to go on your honeymoon, pick your destination! Are you thinking somewhere mountainous or tropical? Maybe somewhere remote and quiet? Or how about a busy, urban destination like Paris or New York City? There really isn’t a wrong answer—simply pick a place that works best for you and your partner. However, once you do pick a destination, you can then do a little research regarding the best time of year to visit. For example, if you’re planning on visiting Hawaii for your honeymoon, springtime is considered the best time of year weather-wise to visit the islands (summer is busy and a little warm, and fall is usually fairly wet). Finding out when it’s best to visit your honeymoon locale should help you pick out a time to visit.

What’s in your wallet?

If you’re on a tight budget, you could always visit your honeymoon location during the off-season. Nearly every honeymoon destination, from Paris to Hawaii, has an off-season—this is typically the time of year when the weather isn’t the best for vacationing and sightseeing. However, you can often score the best deals on hotels or travel packages during an off-season, so if your budget is tight, plan on visiting your destination during this time.

Adventure or romantic vacation?

Are you hoping to have a little adventure on your honeymoon, or are you simply looking to get away? Going back to our Hawaii example, if you’re planning on spending a great deal of time outdoors, exploring the local sights, then it might be best to plan your honeymoon when the weather is at its best. However, if you’re simply planning on enjoying some time with your partner in the comforts of a beautiful hotel or resort, then weather shouldn’t matter much, so you can plan your honeymoon whenever it’s convenient for you and your partner.

Picking the date

Once you have an idea of when it might be best for you and your partner to visit your honeymoon destination, you can finally pick a date. For example, if you want to visit Hawaii during the spring and you’re also having a spring wedding, then you can leave right after your wedding if you’d like. Or, if you’re getting married in the spring, but the best time to visit your honeymoon locale is in the summer, you can wait a few months until you leave. However, keep in mind that even if you don’t have any time constraints concerning when you should leave for your honeymoon, it’s still a good idea to wait a few days after your wedding to head out for your trip. The wedding itself can be very tiring and stressful, so it might be a good idea to rest up for a few days. You want to make sure that you have enough energy to enjoy your honeymoon, so do take a day or two to catch up on sleep and make sure you truly enjoy your honeymoon.
