Choosing the Perfect Centerpiece

Jamie McGregor

In the world of flowers, it’s possible to create table centerpieces as beautiful as they are unique. When deciding on options, here are a few factors worth considering.

Low

Low arrangements are great because they allow guests to see each other across the table. For a modern effect, keep the arrangements tight and monochromatic in clear glass vases. For a more organic, natural look, allow flowers and greenery to overflow from wooden boxes onto the table.

Tall

Tall centerpieces are very dramatic and glamorous. Here, you’ll want to use narrow, clear vases to avoid obstructing your guests’ view of each other; make sure the arrangement’s puff is above eye level of those seated at the table.

Small

For a different type of dramatic impact, cluster several small arrangements together, housing using a vessel type that matches your theme, such as mason jars, bud vases, bottles, or vintage vases. Lined up along rectangular table they look especially beautiful, and you can also mix several types of vessels for a more eclectic look.

Hanging

Hanging flower arrangements, such as a flower chandelier, are a beautiful way to decorate your reception hall. Talk to a local florist for possible ideas.

Terrarium

Because they don’t require water, terrariums make great centerpieces—and can also double as favors for guests!

Potted

Using potted plants as your centerpieces is a very environmentally friendly approach, and like the terrarium, can also double as gifts for your guests.

Birch Vases

These natural vases are great for a rustic-themed wedding. Available in a variety of sizes, they’re also able to be mixed and matched according to height and width.

Bird Cages

Try filling birdcages with flowers as your centerpieces for some whimsical décor! Use them on their own, or else mix them in with other vase arrangements and props.

While these are just a few ideas to get you started, the goal is to make sure your centerpieces serve as an extension of your personal style and taste. Try adding décor elements that speak to your personality—like books, animal figurines, or even fruits and vegetables.
