Wedding Ideas for Winter

Allison L. Doyle

Songs and advertisements tell us that winter is the most wonderful time of the year and is the happiest season of all, so why not host a wedding during these festive holiday months? Whether you want to incorporate a Christmas theme into your big day, ring in the New Year with nuptials, or celebrate among the snow, read on to learn about some incredibly cool ideas if you are interested in hosting a winter wonderland wedding.

Ornament Seating Cards

A fun, easy, and affordable way to work the holiday into your winter wedding is to use ornaments as seating card holders. These can be purchased in bulk, selected to match your wedding colors, and guests can even take them home to hang on their own trees, as a memento from your special day.

Festive Drinks

Guests will feel right at home when you serve up some festive drinks during dessert hour or at the bar. Why not serve winter beverages like hot cocoa or hot cider adorned with a cinnamon stick? You can even set up a tray of holiday cookies to complement the feel-good drinks at your cold, but cozy, winter wedding reception.

Faux Snow

One con of having a winter wedding is that your ceremony must be held indoors. However, you can easily bring the look of the outdoors inside, sans the chilly temps! Simply line your ceremony venue with a long white runner and adorn the sides of the aisles with frosted, white candles. You can even select some candles that have some sparkle and sheen on them, to mimics the look of snow. If your budget is big, you can even purchase bundles of branches, spray-paint them white or silver, and add them to the aisles. Guests will be wowed by the look of your indoor winter wonderland.

Enchanted Bouquet

There is something enchanting about shimmer and shine of a blanket of fresh, fallen snow. Why not replicate that enchantment in your bouquet? Consider putting together a brooch bouquet with the help of a crafty friend or florist. It’s great for brides who want to do something unique, keeping with a winter theme, while avoiding seasonal flowers that may clash with an all-white, snow style theme. You can add a personal touch and utilize antique brooches from family members, present or past; or pick up a bundle at your local antique store or flea market. Your bouquet will sparkle and shine in the candlelight of your winter affair and will photograph beautifully against your dress!

Pretty Poses

If you have decided to get married during the winter months, it is probably because you love the look of snow, you like to feel cozy, and there's something magical in the air during this season. Take advantage of your snowy setting by capturing some pictures outdoors. Fur, satin gloves, and a woodland backdrop make for a pretty picture you’re sure to always treasure. The best part is if it’s not snowing the day of your event, your photographer can capture the look of snow as you quickly toss a handful up in the air!

Silver and Blue Color Scheme

One color scheme that gets overlooked for winter weddings but looks completely chic and unique is tiffany blue and silver. It blends gorgeously with white flowers, a snowy backdrop, and a white wedding dress. It’s great for couples who want to marry in January or February, or simply want to get away from the typical red and green Christmas colors.

Pinecone Boutonnieres

Pinecones are often overlooked when planning a winter wedding, but they don’t just work well for fall weddings; they are huge hits during winter festivities. A pinecone boutonniere looks rustic, natural, masculine, and unique. They are ultra-affordable and photograph beautifully. Ask your florist to create one that is held together by twine and is secured with a discreet satin bow. You can even be daring and opt to carry a very hearty pinecone bouquet instead of traditional winter flowers like poinsettias or holly.

Winter Vintage

There is something elegant and chic about a vintage winter theme. Allow these ornaments to inspire you and help you create a beautiful backdrop, put together a pastel color palette, or even create an oldie’s Christmas hit list for guests to enjoy during your cocktail hour. Vintage ornaments add a classy touch to winter celebrations and guests love selecting one from a Christmas tree and taking it home as a favor.

Incorporate Christmas Carol Lyrics

A cute way to incorporate the holiday into your festivities is by utilizing snippets of Christmas carols. You can print out recognizable lines from songs and attach them to each table centerpiece to add some personality and create a Christmas connection for weddings taking place in December.

Throw a New Year’s Eve Bash

One way to certainly ring in the New Year is by tying the knot as the ball drops! A New Year’s wedding is a very popular theme with couples who want to get married during the winter months, have all of their friends and family in one place for this momentous occasion, and celebrate a new year by starting a new life. This image shows how sophisticated black, white, and silver can be and how fun party accessories can be incorporated as décor, which is affordable, yet functional.

Mini Wreaths

These mini wreaths truly do look festive for winter month weddings. Whether you opt to hang them on every guest's chair or only on the wedding party’s seats, they are easy to make, incorporate into your design scheme, and can be taken home by guests to hang as a winter decoration.

There truly is something special about tying the knot in the winter. Be sure to consider some of these smart, chic, and sophisticated ideas for your winter wedding to wow your guests and create a day that you’ll always remember.
