The Wedding Cocktail Hour Deconstructed

Brooke Kelly

Is the cocktail hour really an hour? That traditional break between the ceremony and reception where guests can mingle, sip on beverages, eat appetizers and get ready for the reception is more commonly referred to as The Cocktail Hour. But how long does cocktail time really need to be?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help determine how to properly plan a worthwhile cocktail experience for your guests:

Are you seeing your new spouse-to-be prior to the ceremony?

  • More and more couples are opting to do a first look to ensure all of their photos are captured in a timely manner by expediting the picture taking process after the ceremony. If you choose to do a first look, your cocktail portion might not need to be a full hour. Working with your photographer to map out all of the after ceremony photos that need to be taken can ensure that you and your wedding party will have the appropriate amount of time to finish everything.
  • If you decide not to do a first look, you will need to make sure you have more time to take photos after the ceremony, in which case could mean allotting an entire hour for the cocktail portion of your day.

Does your venue include a full hour on top of your reception time for the cocktail portion?

  • If you answered yes, then a full hour means plenty of time for photos. Plus, if you decided on a first look, then you can join your guests during the cocktail portion.
  • If you answered no, then that means any time you allot for the cocktail portion will cut into your reception and dancing time. If you need a full hour, then you will need to work with your venue on the best use of the rest of your timeline so you don’t feel rushed during your reception.

Think of your cocktail reception like a hyped-up happy hour. What things do you love at a good happy hour? Great food, fun adult and non-adult beverages, and even activities can set the tone for an amazing night. Here are some suggestions for a fun cocktail experience no matter what the length:

  • Signature cocktails
  • Hosted beverages
  • An assortment of appetizers
  • Food action stations
  • Activities such as a photo booth, lawn games, guestbook signing
  • Custom lounge furniture seating
  • Live music
