How to Style a Wedding

Chelsea Arme, Private Event Director of Brookside Golf Club

Not sure where to begin when styling your wedding venue? Whether you have concerns about the old carpet, low ceilings, or those dreaded wall photos, here are a 10 easy ways to style your wedding and spruce up a venue!

1. Stay In Your Element

Use existing elements in the space for inspiration! You chose the venue for a reason. Whether it was for the location, the rustic feel, or the gorgeous views, focus on this aspect of your wedding site and run with it!

2. Keep It Cohesive

Some brides may feel as though picking a "theme" limits you when choosing your wedding décor; but in reality a theme is essential to tying together the whole wedding! You can pick a color scheme or a unique era in time—whatever you choose as a theme, stick with it from beginning to end.

3. Shed Light On Your Ideas

Carefully planned lighting décor will leave your guests looking where you want them to. If you are trying to draw eyes away from the carpet, light up the ceiling! You can use your color scheme to pick accents for up-lights and gobos. (Also, hiring a lighting tech is never a bad idea.)

4. Cover it Up

Are the walls in need of fresh paint? Are the ceiling tiles peeling and old? Cover them up! Use pipe & drape to cover the walls and ceiling with chandeliers to hide any flaws. This will add drama to the night and your guests would never know what you're covering up!

5. Dress Up the Entrance & Hallways

Make a good first impression with your guests. Add special décor and touches to the front walkway by using florals, votive candles, lanterns, welcome signs and/or planted trees. Beautiful embellishments will give your venue that “wow” factor you’re looking for.

6. Beautify the Bar

Don’t forget about the most popular spot at the wedding – your bar! Create fun drink special signs to display on or in front of the bar area. Even go all out and rent stylish, colored glassware for the guests. Request lemon or fruit garnishes; but whatever you do, don't disrupt the bartender's duties. Flowers on the bar will just get in the way.

7. Change Up Your Tables

Don’t get caught up in the traditional round banquet tables of 10. Instead, turn to long banquet-style tables that encourage a more family-style feeling! Or, if you’re not ready to let go of tradition, try an eclectic table arrangement that mixes both long tables and rounds. Changing it up allows you to seat groups of people more easily because you're not stuck with 10 to a table. It can also be a fun new way to look at your banquet room!

8. Pamper Your Seats

If your wedding venue only offers the typical worn-out-ugly-blah banquet chairs – don’t fret. Just upgrade your chairs! A chair cover makes a world of difference, especially when you wrap it with ribbon or lace. You can also upgrade to the chiavari-chair style, which comes in all colors and seat cushions.

9. Liven up the Loo

It’s likely that the restrooms will need a little attention, but you don't have to go overboard. A nice centerpiece floral arrangement is a nice touch on the counter with a bottle of crisp perfume. Or a care basket with tissues, deodorant, gum, etc. is always a nice touch!

10. Map Out the Night

If your wedding venue plays host to your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, make sure there's a clear and natural flow between the spaces. You may need to design cute, but functional, signs that direct guests to where they need to be or to point out the restrooms.
