Finding the Right First Dance Song for You

Anna Dukehart, The Oregon Golf Club

Imagine dancing with your new spouse, everyone’s eyes on you as you are lost in the moment of your special song, hopefully not stepping on each other’s toes. Your first dance song—whether it’s a romantic classic or a fun, modern hit—should be one that has meaning to you both. Perhaps you both heard the song at a concert or during a movie, or you both have loved the song for years. Regardless of the reason behind your first dance song, make sure to choose a first dance song you will both enjoy, and one that you can actually dance to as well.

If you have hired a DJ, make sure they have the version of the song you want. If you hired a live band, check to see if they have that song in their repertoire, in case they need time to learn it for your wedding. It’s also not a bad idea to have them perform it for you beforehand to make sure you like their take on it. Everyone has their own taste in music, and whether you pick a more mainstream song or something more obscure, don’t worry about what your guests will think—it’s your song, so choose the one you want!

Below are a few ideas to get you started on finding the right first dance song for you, no matter what your taste may be!
