The 2016 Color of the Year & What It Means for Your Wedding

Meredith Anderson

Each year, color industry leader PANTONE choose a Color of the Year, a symbolic color snapshot that is seen as a trendsetter for event décor, swag, and ambiance for the coming year. As described on its website, the PANTONE Color of the Year represents “what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.”

And The Winners Are...

This year, 2016, has proven unique. For the first time, two shades together have been named – Rose Quartz and Serenity. Again, as described by the site: “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

That said, this is the year to incorporate both Rose Quartz (a light, blush pink) and Serenity (a calming blue) into your upcoming event!

Rose Quartz & Serenity

The blending of the warmer and cooler tones of these colors mirrors modern event themes and aesthetics. The balance between light and dark, matte and shiny, bold and complementary all contribute to memorable events and breathtaking décor. By effortless blending these two shades together, fluid aesthetics develop a calming, welcoming atmosphere. These shades will be extremely popular with weddings, as they are symbolic of bringing two sides together to meld into one.

It is natural to see these colors as purely spring or summer, as they are reminiscent of clear skies and lush gardens. However, they can transition into fall and winter when paired with elements of darker shades of pink and blue. Alternatively, adding a gray, silver, or pearlescent metallic element can elevate them for the most elegant of events all year round.

Creative Ways to Incorporate These Colors Into Your Event!

There are many ways to incorporate the PANTONE Color of the Year into your 2016 event. Both of these colors lend themselves to beautiful floral arrangements, accented by white and ivory neutrals. Other simple ways to incorporate Rose Quartz and Serenity would be through bridal party dresses, sashes, and ties, cake decorations and accents, dessert displays and signage, uplighting and draping, photo booth backgrounds, and party favors. Baby showers can use both of these colors to evoke an exciting celebration of a family expanding while also being gender inclusive. Bridal showers and engagement parties can set the tone for an upcoming wedding by blending two families together in a thematic, colorful way.

Both Rose Quartz and Serenity complement pinks, yellows, greens, grays, browns, and purples; they can be added as an accent color to help make décor pop. They would be a great soft addition to an event with bright, bold colors to help create a welcoming space for guests without being overwhelming. Expect many “oohs” and “ahhs” as guests see how beautiful these colors blend together and highlight your special occasion.
