You're Engaged, Now What?

Unsure how to start planning your wedding? We suggest taking a deep breath and a few moments to learn the key steps that’ll set you on the path to creating the day of your dreams.

Venue and Vendors

The first details to consider are twofold: When the wedding will be, and the number of attendees. If your date is flexible, consider booking during an off-peak day or season to save money—not only on your venue, but on other vendors as well. Before deciding on a venue, however, you’ll need to have a tentative headcount to ensure you find an appropriately sized location.

The next step is to brainstorm possible locations for the ceremony and reception. Keep in mind that weather can play a factor in how the day goes—something to think about if you’re looking at outdoor locations such as beaches, barns, or gardens. If you’d rather play it safe, you might want to look at hotels or country clubs.

After deciding on a venue, ask if they offer a preferred vendors list, which will save you a great deal of time and heartache. Because they’re in the wedding business, they’ll typically have a list of companies they know to be reliable professionals.

Lastly, booking early is definitely the way to go—these days, couples plan about a year in advance, so you’ll want to reserve your date while it’s still available.

Money-Saving Tips

By planning ahead, you’ll be able to save money across a broad category of wedding must-haves. When it comes to your floral arrangements, for example, using your reception centerpieces at the ceremony allows for significant savings on decorations.

As far as the cake goes, you can save money any number of ways. One possibility is to go one tier down—you can always buy a cake stand to add height, and then have the bakery make a sheet cake to keep in the kitchen for cutting.

Another option is to serve cupcakes. Then, you can still place your cake on the top tier of the stand, and some venues will waive the cake cutting fee. It can’t hurt to ask!

Favors

Favors are an area where you can really show your creative side. One idea is to have a candy table, offering custom-filled bags that match your theme or colors. Research options on online bulk candy sites.

Photo Booth

Everyone loves a photo booth!  After a few cocktails, it's amazing how comfortable your guests will get in front of the camera. Not only do they get to take home some fun memories, but you’ll get to see the candid shots later!

Décor

Start by seeing what your venue offers by way of linens, lighting, and decorations. Spruce up what they have with a few uplights or candles, or else bring in extras from home—maybe a crystal vase or hurricanes that can be displayed around the room along with memories of you and your fiancé that add character and keep conversations flowing.

Remember: Planning is all in the details! Make lots of lists, enlist the help of good friends and family members, and take that deep breath. You'll be glad you did!
